Plenty of houses in the North and South Ends have no off-street parking whatsoever. That is normal here and it is not a dealbreaker. It means a street placement with a municipal permit, which takes a bit of lead time and rules out same-day in most cases. Triple-deckers, multi-family and three flights of stairs
If you are clearing a third-floor unit, the container size matters less than the staircase. Old triple-decker stairs are narrow, they turn twice, and a queen box spring does not go down them without a fight. Take the doors off the hinges early. Break down anything that comes apart. Budget twice the time you think for the first floor and half for the rest, because the first load is where you learn the route.
For a single unit turnover — a tenant move-out, a student flat near the university in September — a 15 yard container is usually the sensible call. The state bans that catch homeowners out
Massachusetts bans a long list of material from disposal, and the rules apply to a homeowner's load exactly as they apply to a contractor's. The ones that surprise people on a house clearance are mattresses and box springs, textiles, metal including appliances, clean gypsum wallboard, wood from construction and demolition, and leaves and yard waste. Separating is not a nuisance we invented. Metal has scrap value, clean wood and clean gypsum go to processors, and a load that arrives already sorted costs less to tip than one that has to be picked apart. Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
Not if it is set properly. We put boards under the rails on every driveway placement, which spreads the load across the surface rather than concentrating it on four small steel points. The real risk is a driveway that already has freeze-thaw cracking or a soft patch from a wet spring. Point those out to the driver before he backs in and he will shift the set point a few feet.
My house has no driveway. Can I still rent a dumpster?
Yes, but it changes the timeline. A container on the street in New Bedford needs a municipal permit, and that has to be arranged before delivery rather than on the morning of. Street placements also come with a snow emergency caveat in winter, because a parking ban can force a container to move at short notice. Can I put a mattress in the dumpster?
Not in with the general load. Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from disposal in November 2022, along with textiles, and they have to go to a processor for recycling instead. Standard rental runs several days, which suits most weekend projects, and we extend without drama if the job drags. Driveway placements are easy to leave in place. A street placement is different because the permit has an end date and winter parking rules can override everything, so on those we would rather agree the pull-out date up front than have the city calling you.
