How it started

Two brothers, one truck, and a phone somebody answered

Mark Bedford and his brother Daniel started Bedford Bros with a single roll-off and a handful of containers. The idea was not clever — it was simply that the haulers working this stretch of the South Coast were hard to reach, vague about timing, and quick to add a charge nobody had mentioned on the phone.

So the pitch was the opposite. One number that covers the job. A delivery time, then actually hitting it. Answering the phone yourself. In a city the size of New Bedford word moves quickly — one remodeller tells another, a roofer mentions it to a supplier — and inside a couple of years one truck was not enough.

The company is bigger now. The rules have not moved.

What we stand on

Four things we will not trade away

  • A quote you can hold us to

The number we give you covers delivery, the rental period, pickup, fuel, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance. If a job looks likely to run heavy we say so before the truck leaves, not after it is weighed.

  • We know the Massachusetts rules cold

Massachusetts bans concrete, metal, gypsum, construction wood, yard waste, tyres, mattresses and textiles from disposal. We tell you what has to come out of the load up front — which is the difference between a clean job and a rejected one.

  • Somebody else's property gets treated like ours

Boards under the rails on every driveway placement. Drivers who walk the spot before they set. And if we do leave a mark, we own it and sort it out.

  • We can place a box where others will not

Most of this city has no off-street parking. We work narrow streets, shared drives and street permits every week, and we will tell you honestly what fits before you book.

Where we work

The South Coast is a specific place, and it shows in the work

Serving this corner of Massachusetts properly means knowing things a national dispatcher never will. That the village lanes at Padanaram and Mattapoisett were laid out for a different century of traffic. That sandy coastal subgrade behaves nothing like the glacial till inland around Lakeville and Rochester. That a long cranberry-bog drive holds a loaded truck fine in October and will not in late March.

It means knowing the housing. New Bedford's triple-deckers and Victorians carry plaster and lath that weighs several times what modern drywall does — a couple of rooms of it will surprise you — along with pre-1980 lead paint and asbestos-era materials that have to be assessed before anything gets broken up.

And it means the calendar. The autumn roofing rush before the weather turns. Interior renovation through winter. UMass Dartmouth move-out. Seasonal turnovers on the waterfront at Marion and Westport. And every spring, the whole region deciding at once that the basement is finally getting cleared.

Meet the work

What a normal week looks like

Monday might open with a 15 yard squeezed onto a North End street for a basement cleanout, permit and all, then a swap on a framing job out in Dartmouth where the crew filled a 30 faster than anyone planned. Tuesday could be a tear-off in Fairhaven where the box has to go tight to the eave because there is no side yard at all.

Midweek there is usually an estate clearance — a family home in Acushnet or a cottage out toward Westport, where the job is as much about patience as tonnage, and where the mattresses and textiles need sorting before anything else moves. Fridays lean commercial: restaurant and retail fit-outs, marine and waterfront businesses, property managers turning units.

Then the weather leans on all of it. Autumn is the roofing rush. Winter is interior work and snow-cleared placements. And when a nor'easter comes through, everything gets rearranged and we run storm loads until the limbs are off people's yards.

Common questions

About Bedford Bros Dumpster Rental

Who owns Bedford Bros Dumpster Rental?

Two brothers — Mark Bedford and Daniel Bedford — founded and still run the company. It is locally owned and operated out of our yard on 1011 Church St in New Bedford: no franchise agreement, no out-of-state parent company, and no national call centre between you and the person who schedules the truck.

How long have you been in business?

Since 2014 — around 11 years serving New Bedford, Bristol County, Plymouth County and the wider South Coast. In that time we have hauled for homeowners clearing a single basement, roofers stripping two-layer tear-offs off triple-deckers, and builders running several sites at once from Westport to Wareham.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — licensed to haul in Massachusetts and carrying general liability and commercial auto cover. If you are a contractor, property manager or condo association and need a certificate of insurance on file before we come on site, ask when you call and we will usually have it issued the same day.

What areas do you cover?

New Bedford and across Bristol County and Plymouth County — Dartmouth, South Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Mattapoisett, Marion, Rochester, Freetown, Westport, Wareham, Fall River, Somerset, Swansea, Lakeville, Middleborough, Berkley and Raynham among them. If you are just outside that ring, call anyway.

Do you know the Massachusetts disposal rules?

In detail, because we deal with them every day. Massachusetts bans asphalt, brick and concrete, metal, clean gypsum, construction wood, yard waste, tyres, and since November 2022 mattresses and textiles from disposal. We will tell you what has to be separated before you load anything, rather than after a load gets rejected.

Do you work with contractors on ongoing accounts?

We do, and a good share of our week is repeat trade. Accounts get priority on swap-outs, consistent pricing across every site you are running, certificates of insurance on file and consolidated invoicing. If you have more than one job live at a time it is worth setting up properly.
