A roll-off is an open-top steel container with rails welded along the bottom and wheels at the back. The truck runs a cable out, hooks the front, and winches the box up onto its bed — then reverses the process at your kerb so the container rolls off the back and settles on those rails. That mechanism is why the truck needs room behind it, and why nearly every access problem you will hit is about length rather than width.
It also explains the shape of the service. There is no compaction, no crew, no hourly clock. The container is yours for the rental period, you fill it at whatever pace suits, and we come back and take it away. You are buying a flat price with a stated tonnage allowance, and the two things that change that number are the size you take and what you decide to put in it.
What the truck needs from your site
Almost every failed delivery comes down to one of three things, and all three are easy to check the day before rather than argue about on the morning.
- About 60 feet of straight approach. The truck has to line up square and back the container down. It cannot swing a box into a spot sideways
- Roughly 23 feet of overhead clearance. The bed tilts high during the drop. Low branches, cable and service drops, carport roofs and porch overhangs are the usual culprits on older streets
- A firm, reasonably level surface. Soft spring lawn and a sand driveway will let a loaded box sink, and a steep slope makes the roll unpredictable
- A clear path and clear cars — once the container is down it stays where it landed until we come back for it
Where the site cannot give us that, the answer is usually a street placement with a permit. That is common in the older parts of the city and it is not a problem, it just needs planning ahead of the delivery date.
Five sizes, and what each one is really for
Yardage is cubic volume, not weight, and the mistake people make is choosing on volume when their material is dense. Match the size to what you are throwing away, not to how big the job feels.
- 10 yard — the heavy box. Concrete, brick, tile, dirt, a small bathroom strip-out. Low walls, short footprint, fits a tight city driveway. See the 10 yard page
- 15 yard — a basement, a garage, a single-unit clearout, a small roof
- 20 yard — the workhorse. Whole-house cleanouts, remodels, most tear-offs
- 30 yard — light and bulky. Framing offcuts, furniture, commercial clearances, big estate jobs
- 40 yard — the biggest we run, and only right for genuinely light material. Never for rubble

Flat rate, stated tonnage, no invented extras
Our price is a flat rate for the container, the delivery, the rental period and the haul, with a tonnage allowance stated when you book. You are told what the allowance is and what happens if you exceed it, in the same conversation, before anything leaves the yard. That is the entire pricing structure. What actually moves the number is the material: a 20 yard of household furniture and a 20 yard of plaster are the same box and very different loads.
Two things will genuinely add cost and we would rather say so now. Going over the tonnage allowance, and putting banned material in a general load so it has to be pulled back out — Massachusetts prohibits disposal of asphalt, brick and concrete, metal, clean gypsum wallboard, construction and demolition wood, leaves and yard waste, whole tyres, and since November 2022 mattresses and textiles. What does roll-off actually mean?
It describes how the container is handled. The box has steel rails along its base and wheels at the rear, and the truck winches it up onto a tilting bed with a cable, then rolls it back off at your site. Nothing is compacted and no crew comes with it. That mechanism is why the truck needs a long straight approach rather than a wide one.
How much room do you need to deliver?
Roughly 60 feet of straight approach so the truck can line up and back the container down, and about 23 feet of overhead clearance because the bed tilts high during the drop. Low limbs and service drops stop more deliveries around here than narrow driveways do. If you are not sure, send a photo of the spot and we will tell you before the truck is loaded.
How is a roll-off priced?
A flat rate covering delivery, the rental period, the haul and disposal up to a stated tonnage allowance. You are told the allowance and the overage basis when you book, so there is nothing to discover on the invoice. The two things that change the number in practice are the size you take and whether the material is dense enough to run past the allowance.
Can I move the dumpster once it is delivered?
No, and please do not try. A loaded roll-off weighs several tons and dragging it will tear up whatever it is sitting on and can put it somewhere the truck cannot recover it from. Decide the spot before delivery, walk it with the driver if you are unsure, and clear parked cars first. If it genuinely has to move, call us and we will reposition it.
Which size should I take if I am between two?
Take the smaller one if your material is dense — rubble, plaster, tile, dirt — because you will hit the weight allowance long before you run out of space. Take the larger one if it is bulky and light, like furniture, framing offcuts or packaging. Most people overestimate weight and underestimate volume, which is exactly backwards on a heavy job.
